Rules of the Japan Society of Gene Therapy
[Chapter 1] General rules
- The name of this society shall be the Japan Society of Gene Therapy (hereinafter called JSGT).
- The purpose of JSGT shall be to facilitate interdisciplinary gene therapy research through close co-operation between investigators conducting experimental studies and investigators engaged in clinical studies.
- To achieve the purpose stipulated in the preceding article, JSGTshall conduct the following activities:
- holding an academic conference once each spring to provide investigators the opportunity to present unique studies and to offer lectures for educational purposes.
- holding international symposia on specific themes, when warranted.
- regularly publishing gene therapy newsletters to facilitate the exchange of information among members concerning clinical protocols, etc.
- The tentative secretariat of JSGT shall be located in the office of the Department of Hematology-Oncology, The Institute of Medical Science, the University of Tokyo and the newsletter editorial office shall be located in the office of the Department of Pediatrics of Jikei Medical University.
[Chapter 2] Membership
- Membership in JSGT can be on either a regular or supporting basis.
- Regular members: Regular membership requires recommendation by 2 councilors of JSGT (on of them must be either a director or a manager of JSGT) and subsequent authorization by the council. Each regular member is to pay a membership fee of Yen 5,000 annually. Failure to pay the membership fee for 2 consecutive years willautomatically deprive the person of regular membership.
- Supporting members: Corporations or individuals who donate 200,000 Yen or more at a time to financially support JSGT are registered as supporting members.
The fact of financial support donated by these members will be acknowledged on the program of the general
meeting of JSGT, for the next two years after the donation.
[Chapter 3] Officers
- Officers shall be determined by the following procedures:
- Consultants: Several consultants can be nominated by the board of
directors. Consultants must retire at age 75. Consultants can attend
directors' meetings and give advice concerning the management of this
society.
- Directors: About 30 directors shall be elected on the basis of
recommendation of councilors during a directors' meeting and subsequent
authorization by the council. The directors' term of office shall be 3
years. Directors must retire at age 70. The term of office can be
renewed if approved. Directors shall attend directors' meetings held
during the general meetings of JSGT. Each director is to pay a
membership fee of 15,000 Yen annually.
- Chairman of the general meeting: One general meeting chairman shall
be elected from among the directors during a directors' meeting and
subsequently presented for authorization by the council. The chairman's
term of office shall be one year. The chairman is responsible for the
management of the annual general meeting of JSGT.
- Managers: Not more than thirty managers shall be elected by
recommendation of the board of directors and subsequent authorization by
the council. The manager's term of office shall be 5 years. The term
can be renewed if approved. All managers must retire at age 55.
Managers shall supervise clerical work and assist the chairman of the
general meeting, together with the program commissioners, in devising
plans for academic conferences.
- Auditors: Two auditors shall be nominated by the council. The
auditor's term of office shall be one year. Auditors shall inspect the
reports made by managers concerning the operation of JSGT, and
report the results of the inspection at the annual general meeting of
JSGT.
- Program commissioners: Ten program commissioners shall be nominated
at a managers' meeting and subsequently presented for authorization by
the council. The program commissioners' term of office shall be 2
years. The term can be renewed if approved. Program commissioners
shall attend managers' meetings, devise plans for academic conferences
and select papers for presentation at conferences.
- Councilors: Councilors shall be elected from among regular members,
who have remained members for 5 years or more, by recommendation of at
least three councilors and subsequent authorization at the general
meeting of JSGT. The councilors' term of office shall be 6
years. All councilors must retire at age 65. The term can be renewed
if approved. Each councilor is to pay a membership fee of 10,000 Yen
annually.
- Honorary members: Members who have retired from the office of
director due to reaching the age limit (75) or who have retired from the
office of councilor after 5 years or longer of services due to reaching
the age limit (65) can be made honorary members if approved by the
general meeting. Honorary members can attend councilors' meetings and
give advice concerning the management of JSGT. Honorary members
will not need to pay any membership fee.
[Chapter 4] Meetings
- JSGT will hold the following meetings.
- General meeting: The general meeting shall be held once a year with
the chairman of the general meeting serving as the speaker, to authorize
personnel matters, revisions/additions to rules, accounting, etc.
- Council: Councilors' meetings shall be held when necessary (usually
preceding a general meeting), with the chairman of the general meeting
serving as the speaker, to authorize reports from the board of
directors, managers and auditors and to discuss necessary issues.
- Managers' meeting: The managers' meeting shall be held twice a year
at appropriate times, with the serving chairman of the general meeting
attending. The manager meeting speaker shall be selected from the
managers attending at the given meeting. Clerical matters shall also be
discussed at the managers' meeting.
- Program committee meeting: The program committee shall hold a
meeting after each managers' meeting to devise a plan of the academic
conference for the year and to select papers for presentation at the
academic conference.
- Directors' meeting: The directors' meeting shall be held during the
general meeting. The chairman of the general meeting will serve as the
speaker. During this meeting, the chairman of the next general meeting
shall be nominated from among the directors, and an appropriate number
of managers are to be nominated from among the councilors, for
subsequent authorization at the councilors' meeting.
[Chapter 5] Academic conference
- All academic conferences held by JSGT shall be open to people who
are not members of JSGT. Participation fees will be collected
from the participants.
- Papers for presentation at the academic conference must have at least
one regular member as an author or be endorsed by a letter of
recommendation from a councilor of JSGT.
- Only papers with English titles will be considered for presentation at
the conference. Papers may be presented orally, posted on a bulletin
board, or only printed in the proceedings.
- The chairman of the general meeting, managers and program commissioners
shall select the best one or two papers from among all the papers
presented at the general meeting. A memorial plaque and 50,000 Yen
shall be given to the major author of each such paper.
